What engineered wood is

Engineered wood siding is made from wood strands or fibers bonded with resins and treated against moisture and insects, then embossed and primed or prefinished. Products such as LP SmartSide are of this type. It comes in long lengths, which means fewer joints, and is lighter to handle than fiber cement.

It is still wood, so it is only as durable as its edges and paint. Manufacturers set out how cut edges are sealed, how far boards stop above roofs and ground, and how joints are made. Follow those and it performs; ignore them and the bottom edges swell.

Checklist

Points to check on an engineered wood job

  • Primed or prefinished, and the paint schedule
  • How cut ends are sealed on site
  • Clearance above the ground, roofs, decks and patios
  • Nailing into studs, not only into sheathing
  • Flashing at windows, doors and butt joints

Where it fits around Vineland

Engineered wood is a fit for owners who want painted lap siding on a Cape, a ranch or a two-story house, and for additions where new siding has to sit beside old wood. It is also a way to replace a few failed wood boards with something more stable.

New Jersey's construction code treats the repair or replacement of existing siding on one- and two-family homes as ordinary maintenance, which needs no permit, inspection or notice; polypropylene siding is the exception (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7(c)).

Questions

Engineered Wood Siding: what people ask

Is engineered wood the same as fiber cement?

No. Engineered wood is a wood-based product bonded with resins; fiber cement is cement-based. Both are painted lap siding, but they are cut, handled and maintained differently.

What makes engineered wood siding fail?

Usually water at unsealed cut edges or boards set too close to a roof, deck or the ground. Correct clearances and sealed edges are the main defense.

Can engineered wood replace a few old wood clapboards?

It can, if the profile and exposure match closely enough. The contractor will cut the old boards out, check the wall and fit the new boards to the courses around them.
