Vinyl is hung, not nailed tight

Vinyl expands in summer heat and shrinks in the cold, so each panel hangs on nails driven in the center of its slots and left slightly proud. Panels overlap at the ends and stop short of corner posts and J-channel to leave room for movement. Nailing it tight is the most common installation fault, and it shows up as waves and buckles on a hot afternoon.

Panels come in thicknesses, profiles and textures. Thicker panels sit straighter on the wall and stand up better to knocks. Lap and Dutch lap are the common horizontal profiles; vertical board and batten and shake- or scallop-look panels are used on gables and accents.

Checklist

Questions worth asking about vinyl

  • Which product line, which thickness, and which profile and color?
  • Will the old siding come off, and what goes on the wall underneath?
  • Is foam-backed insulated vinyl an option on this house, and what would change at the windows and trim?
  • How are window and door openings trimmed and flashed?
  • What do the manufacturer's warranty and the contractor's own warranty each cover?

Vinyl on Vineland houses

Vinyl's appeal here is practical: it needs no paint, it sheds rain and it suits the one- and two-story houses that make up much of the area. Its weak points are impact, long exposure to strong sun and poor installation.

Grills, dryer vents and reflected sunlight from some modern windows can distort vinyl, and lawn equipment throws stones at the bottom course. Keep heat sources away from the wall and ask about thicker panels where the wall takes knocks.

Questions

Vinyl Siding: what people ask

Why is my vinyl siding wavy?

Usually because it was nailed too tight or cut without enough room at the ends, so it can't expand. Heat from a grill or reflected sunlight can also warp it. Panels that have been distorted generally need replacing, not refastening.

Can vinyl siding be painted?

It can, with paints made for vinyl and in colors no darker than the maker allows, because darker colors absorb more heat. Check the siding warranty first; painting can affect it.

How long does vinyl siding last?

It depends on the product, the installation and the exposure. Ask the contractor what the product's warranty covers and what they see on houses like yours.
