Two layers that do different jobs
Insulated siding is vinyl with a contoured foam backing glued to it. The foam adds some insulation across the studs, stiffens the panel so it sits straighter and stands up better to knocks, and changes how the wall sounds. It is thicker than standard vinyl, so window and door trim must be deep enough to receive it.
House wrap and other weather-resistive barriers sit behind any siding. Siding sheds most rain, but some always gets behind it; the barrier, lapped shingle-fashion and taped where needed, sends that water back out. Windows and doors are flashed into the barrier so water can't run in at their edges.
Checklist
What to ask about the wall underneath
- Which barrier goes on, and how are its seams lapped and taped?
- How are window and door heads and sills flashed?
- Will insulated panels need deeper trim or J-channel at openings?
- How are outlets, hose bibs, lights and vents boxed out?
- What happens if damaged sheathing is found?
Worth doing while the wall is open
With the siding off is the sensible time to fix a wall. With the old siding off, adding a barrier, correcting flashing and replacing damaged sheathing costs far less than doing it later. Owners planning to stay in the house usually get the most from that work.
Humid summers and wet storms in South Jersey make the barrier and flashing more important than the siding's face. A wall that dries out well lasts.
Questions
Insulated Siding & House Wrap: what people ask
Is insulated siding the same as insulating the walls?
No. It adds a layer of foam outside the studs, which helps, but it does not replace insulation inside the wall cavities. Ask the contractor what the product adds and whether wall cavities need attention too.
Does every siding job include house wrap?
A tear-off should include a weather-resistive barrier. Ask what the price includes and which product is used.
Can house wrap be added without replacing the siding?
Not really. The barrier sits under the siding, so it is added when the siding comes off.
